Recently I was invited to Field and Flourish, an event with Tamsin’s Table and Cecilia Fox. Early that Saturday morning I sat dozing in the car while my lovely Tim chaueffered me to Poowong East in The Strezlecki Ranges.

When I woke up, I went to heaven. Seriously. Tamsin has a lovely property set amongst rolling hills with the biggest and best vegie patch ever, animals galore and a field of roses. Yep, that’s right, a whole field of them, about 500 bushes to be exact. Tamsin is also the inhabitant of a gorgeous home that would make any interiors magazine jealous. Exposed brass piping, windows everywhere (for admiring the stellar view) and beautiful wooden everything. I arrived to hugs and kisses, coffee and delicious lemon cake. I felt like I was at my aunty’s house, and I had just met these ladies!

Melanie from Cecilia Fox, with her trusty assistant, one-year-old son Dusty, led us to the field to forage the roses. There were no rules, just snip what you want. So off we went with boots and hats and the sun on our backs. This experience really took stopping to smell the roses to a new level. Literally, stopping to smell an entire field of roses. And you know, the roses smelt good. And then we snipped them.

We snipped and snipped until we couldn’t snip anymore. A field of roses to be foraged is a lot of work. Meanwhile, back up at the house, Tamsin was preparing lunch—completely sustainable, all the produce was from her property. Tamsin had also made rose petal fizzy drink and mixed it with Prosecco so, don’t-mind-if-we-do, we sipped on that while we made a start on our floral arrangements. It was all very civilised and delightful. I did mention I was in heaven? I had always fancied myself a pretty great floral arranger, but in the presence of several florists I became aware that my floral prowess was nowhere near their level of skill.

It was an entirely wonderful way to spend the day and I really felt I was among friends. Tamsin’s field of roses is so extremely special and unique, I recommend that anyone attend one of her events, just to see the spectacle and take in the scent. A bit of fresh air, a great view and a day spent amongst talent the likes of Tamsin and Melanie really does help one to feel grateful to be alive.
