Research from the Australian National University in 2014 showed that 30 percent of Australians either did not know who to trust or did not trust anyone when it came to climate science. When asked unprompted, respondents identified friends and family (12 percent) and the CSIRO (also 12 percent) as the most trusted sources. So even if you’re not a CSIRO scientist, it turns out you’re just as influential as one when it comes to informing people you know about climate change!

That’s why it’s so powerful to bring up environmental issues with friends, colleagues, family and acquaintances. We can do this each and every day, in casual interactions or in a more structured way. Many people are now hosting climate change kitchen table conversations or dinner parties as a way to get their friends and colleagues more engaged. If you’re in Victoria check out the organisation Climate for Change, which supports you through this process.

Download and read the Climate Council’s Guide To Communicating Change then talk about it with your friends.

Host a climate change film screening and dinner discussion, showing a YouTube video or film while you eat. Afterwards, facilitate a conversation with your guests about how to make a difference on the issue, encouraging everyone to commit to at least one action. Check out our movie list in the side bar for inspiration.
