Support the new economy

The New Economy is the one that serves both people and the planet, where businesses aren’t just out to make whopping profits at the cost of all else. Businesses working towards a more sustainable, regenerative economy acknowledge that they have an important social and environmental role to play, alongside making a profit. Fortunately, more and more businesses are stepping up—and the more we support them, the more of their kind we will see.

Naturally, we can minimise our impact on the climate by minimising the amount of new stuff we buy. But when we do need to buy products and services, it’s good to support companies that are doing good by humanity and the planet—companies that are part of the B Corp movement, for example. The B Corp certification is to sustainable business what Fair Trade certification is to coffee, and it’s growing global community of more than 2,200 businesses in 50-plus countries. As well as looking out for products and services with a B Corp certification, we can choose companies that put some or all of their profits back into community projects.

ACT NOW

Think about the products you buy on a regular basis. Research how they treat their workers, communities and the environment. If you’re not happy with what you find, look for alternatives. Keep a list of best practice goods and services:

  • Milk
  • Cleaning products
  • Coffee
  • Toilet paper
  • Clothing
  • Wine
  • Chocolate
  • Beauty products
  • Hygiene products
