Birkenstock is an icon

The team at Birkenstock share the story and inspiration behind the iconic shoe brand.

Behind extraordinary ideas, there are extraordinary people.

Discussed in this Story

Birkenstock was founded in 1774. That’s extraordinary. Tell us about the family origin story.

At Birkenstock, tradition and heritage are important hallmarks of a brand that dates back not years or even decades, but centuries. Birkenstock is deeply rooted in the fine art of crafting premium quality shoes that are good for you. Since 1774, Birkenstock has passed this commitment down from one generation to the next. The result is the absolute best in quality, comfort and support. Founder Johann Adam Birkenstock is listed as “subject and cobbler” in the church archives of Langen-Bergheim, Germany.

How has the business evolved over the past 250 years?

How things are made matter as much as the product itself. At Birkenstock, we’re proud of our roots, our history, our DNA. That’s because our products are made with deep respect for German and European standards for ethical, social and environmental responsibility. This tradition, quality and craftsmanship is what sets Birkenstock apart, and has since 1774, as a producer of comfort footwear, first and foremost.

When did it come to Australia?

Officially in 1992, although they have been spotted on consumers’ feet as early as the 1970s. The above picture was taken in Victoria, featuring style Madrid & Zurich.

Tell us about Birkenstock’s approach to sustainability.

Environmental protection has long been paramount at Birkenstock. Sustainability is an expression of the company’s corporate ethos rather than a marketing trend. Birkenstock’s environmentally friendly operations reflect this commitment, with the brand constantly working to improve its production processes, products, packaging and logistics.

Birkenstock products are predominantly manufactured in Germany, with a focus on high quality, natural materials. A large proportion of the materials used to create Birkenstock footwear comes from sustainable sources, including cork, natural latex, jute, leather, wool feat, copper and brass. Given their durability, Birkenstock products are also sustainable by nature.

What makes the brand so loveable in your opinion? How do you want people to feel when they’re wearing a pair of Birkenstocks?

These two questions go hand in hand. Birkenstocks are for everyone, there are no specific rules that apply, we would like you to make them your own. You might choose them for style or quality or simply, suitability for the task at hand. We have no specific target audience, we love it if you love them, whoever you are!
