Tell us how you got started with Downunder Wash Co. and why this mission is important to you? 

My wife Jenny was using reusable cloth pads for menstruation for the last 8 years and we wanted to have a specific product that was formulated to clean them. We could not find anything that was made in Australia, so Downunder Wash Co. was born. When we started it was important to us to make products that work, but naturally. Void of any harmful and environmentally unfriendly ingredients. We found that many soap makers are simply milling imported soap, so they have no control over the base ingredients.  We make our soaps using a cold process method that allows us to control every single ingredient we use. 

Downunder Wash Co. is clearly passionate about both the health of the planet, and of people. Can you tell us how your products can support our wellbeing?  

Our products are designed with purpose to ensure they have high efficacy without toxic ingredients. Our Bloody Awesome range is designed to clean all things reusable – period undies, cloth pads and reusable nappies. By helping to keep these items clean we help avoid waste by reducing the number of disposable products entering landfill. Our Bloody Awesome Stain Remover Powder at 150g makes up to 7.5 litres of stain remover when used as a spray as it is only active ingredient – no water and not bulking agents. This means we have a lower carbon footprint contributing to reduce omissions. We have also made our Bloody Awesome soap bars super hard to ensure they last as long as possible. 

Your cleaning products are designed for use on reusable products, can you tell us a bit about the types of products they work best on, and any other uses we might not think of?

Our Bloody Awesome range was originally formulated for cleaning reusable cloth pads, period undies and reusable nappies. However, the alkaline cleaner in our Stain Remover Powder works amazingly well on blood, sweat, fat / oil, poo, dirt. chocolate, make-up and more. We have also been able to formulate our Bloody Awesome soap bars with the same alkaline powder. I use our Sweet Orange soap for my active wear as it removes sweat stains and odour with ease. The powder can also be used to clean the vents above your stove – simply place the vents in a sink, sprinkle over with the powder and cover with boiling hot water. The combination of hot water and alkaline powder will strip away all of the fat and grease. Septic tanks can become very acidic and stinky. The powder can be used to help balance the pH of a septic system and remove reduce the foul smell. 

You talk about the importance of making small changes with big impact, can you tell us a bit about the type of impact one person can make by shifting to environmentally safe cleaning products?

All of the products that we use end up going back into the environment, so it is highly important to consider the ingredients. Chlorinated bleaching agents and other toxic ingredients all have an impact on the environment. By using products with natural ingredients we can avoid having a  detrimental impact. 

Finally – we’re big believers in helping people find the tools and knowledge they need to live an empowered life. Can you share how Downunder Wash Co empowers your customers?

We have spent quite some time on our Tips & Tricks page of our website to support effect cleaning for our customers’ to reference. Stained items of clothing that can be cleaned can make it back into the closet instead of the garbage. Simple tricks like washing oil from the back of the stain first and the all-important cold water for blood can ensure our garments are kept clean. We also try to empower our customers to make an educated and informed choice. E.g. Our new Ruffy Body range lists all the ingredients we use plus explains the purpose of the ingredient. This gives the customer full clarity on why an ingredient is in our product and what it does.
