The Natural Shoe Store makes feet happy

Simon King, founder of The Natural Shoe Store, talks to us about footwear that’s good for your feet and kind to the planet.

Behind extraordinary ideas, there are extraordinary people.

Discussed in this Story

What is the inspiration behind The Natural Shoe Store?

Every step matters. Good shoes are good for you. Naturally shaped footwear has your feet functioning as they are made to. With your feet looked after, your whole body is more likely to follow. The same applies with the choice of materials. Well made shoes, made from natural materials and minimal resources are good for all. That is our focus. We also believe you can care for yourself and the planet and look good at the same time. Our brands Duckfeet and Nature are both focused in this direction and we are gathering other like-minded brands.

How is the business a force for good in the world?

Today, every action you take is a political action. Where you focus your attention, what you listen to and how you vote with your dollars. To make it count requires conscious choice. To that end we focus on a policy of keeping good company. The businesses we align with, be them suppliers or customers, have good values that we are proud to represent and have them represent us. We see this approach growing and are excited by it. Everything, good and bad, has influence, we use our influence for good. Consciously.

What do you want customers to feel when they’re walking away in your shoes?

Happy feet. Their bones have the space to operate correctly. To splay, to relax, to breathe. Like they are on holiday. I also want them to feel good about the whole process and where they are choosing to spend their money.

What’s a challenge you’ve experienced and how have you worked through it?

Recently I walked the Overland Track. After 20 minutes I heard the words in my head “I can’t do this” and I wondered whether I could actually cope with the 6 days. I felt weak and was looking for a way out. My wife and kids were there, I had no choice. I had to keep going. I took the one step at a time approach, focused on the surroundings and told myself to shut up. It worked. The 6 days were some of the best I have spent. Insanely beautiful.

How does our relationship with clothing and footwear need to change?

If you are asking yourself that question then you are on the right path.

What does success look like for you?

A frictionless cog in a circular economy that includes a smile on my face and a healthy and happy family. Balance.
